Bold headline: BYU stands firm as Kalani Sitake commits to a long-term future in Provo, despite strong overtures from a national powerhouse.
Kalani Sitake explored the possibility of departing his “dream job” and alma mater, a path he has referenced repeatedly over the years. Yet ultimately, the lure of one of college football’s blue-blood programs wasn’t enough to pull him away from Provo. On Tuesday, BYU announced a long-term contract extension with Sitake.
Penn State had been seeking a successor to former coach James Franklin, who was dismissed in October. The Nittany Lions expressed serious interest in Sitake, but BYU succeeded in convincing the program’s face and leader to remain in place.
“He is a proven leader, and we are grateful he is once again choosing BYU,” said athletic director Brian Santiago in a Tuesday press release. “His legacy of building a championship program the BYU way will continue. He is one of the best people in the business. We are excited to ride the wave of positive momentum with him.”
The decision ends a tense stretch for Provo as the No. 11-ranked Cougars prepare to face No. 5 Texas Tech in the Big 12 championship game in Arlington, Texas, this Saturday. BYU’s only loss this season came at the hands of the Red Raiders in Lubbock on November 8. To secure a spot in this year’s College Football Playoff, BYU will likely need a victory over Texas Tech. A second loss to a top-five opponent could jeopardize their at-large chances, as they currently sit amid a cluster of teams pursuing at-large berths.
Sitake has led BYU since 2016. During his tenure, he has steered the program to four seasons with double-digit wins, including three 11-win campaigns, this year included. Since moving BYU to the Big 12 in 2023 after 12 years as an independent, the Cougars have gone 22-3 over the past two seasons.
“I am humbled and grateful for the outpouring of love from BYU fans and for the trust and support shown to our football program by our university leadership,” Sitake stated on Tuesday.
In a fall interview with The Athletic about his leadership approach, Sitake address questions about his name resurfacing in coaching searches each year. He framed the attention as a sign of a thriving program—more visibility often follows success.
“If anything could pull me away from this place, it would have to be something truly extraordinary, given what this institution stands for and the work and investment I’ve poured into it,” he said. “I also know that if goals are to be reached, it won’t hinge on one person. If this program isn’t built around one player, then it certainly won’t be about one coach.”
Sitake’s humility has deepened his bond with a fan base eager to see BYU reclaim national prominence after a long period as an independent. He has transformed BYU’s recruiting outlook, turning a previously challenging landscape into a growth opportunity. According to 247Sports’ Big 12 composite rankings for the 2026 class, BYU sits second in the region behind Texas Tech, having secured five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons (Folsom, California), who plans a Church mission before joining the program.
A recurring theme in Sitake’s remarks is his aspiration to emulate two mentors—BYU legend LaVell Edwards and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, both of whom remained highly valued even when pursued by other programs. Sitake acknowledged ongoing recruitment questions in October, with some prospects hearing that he might not stay long in Provo.
“People say, ‘Oh, he won’t be around when you get there,’ and I reply, ‘This is ten years I’ve been here. I love it here. This is home,’” he said.
